| The Daegu Exhibition and Convention
Hall was finally opened on April 19, 2001. EXCO
Daegu, the state-of-the-art exhibition hall meeting
international standards promoted by the Daegu
Municipal Government, took 44 months to be completed
at last year's end since construction was launched
on May 1997. The project, implemented as a joint
venture between the private and the public sector,
was designed by TLPA, an American designing firm
and Korea Architectural Office. Seven companies
in Daegu including Hwa Sung Industrial Co. took
part in the construction of the Center which stands
five stories above and four stories under ground.
The building, with a total area of 87,294 m©÷,
is the nation's second exhibition and convention
facility completed following Seoul's COEX.
On the eve of the opening ceremony, a reception
attended by over 600 dignitaries was held in
the lobby of the fifth floor and the Dream Concert
of TBC gave a celebration performance at the
outdoors exhibition center attended by over
20,000 citizens. The opening ceremony of EXCO
Daegu began at 11AM, April 19 and was attended
by over 500 dignitaries including the Minister
of Industry and Resources Jae-Shik Jang, Mayor
of Daegu City Hee-Gap Moon, Governor of North
Kyongsang Province Ui-Geun Lee, delegations
from sister cities and companies including Japan's
Hiroshima City Council Chairman Hirano Hiroaki
and the president of Italy's Overseas Trade
Corporation based in Korea.
The Minister of Industry and Resources, Jae-Shik
Jang, proclaimed that the government will spare
no efforts in promoting trade exhibitions to
be actively held at EXCO Daegu, which would
the specific result of the Milano Project, so
that the Center may play a leading role in the
development of the textile industry in Daegu
and revitalization of the regional economy.
In his commemorative address, the Mayor of
Daegu Municipal Government, Hee-Gap Moon, expressed
his hopes for Daegu Exhibition and Exposition
Center to serve as an arena for international
exchanges in the truest sense by forming a link
with local industries and create a synergetic
effect to the maximum degree for the development
of the entire region.
Also during the opening ceremony, 16 persons
who made dedicated endeavors to the establishment
of EXCO Daegu were awarded citations including
the citations from the President of Korea delivered
to President Heung-Joong Lee of Hwa Sung Industrial
Co., the architectural firm in charge of the
project, President Se-Ki Jeon of Topec Engineering
and Architectural Firm, the supervising company
and President Young-Do Yoon of Korea Architectural
Office, the designing company.
