Daegu is a basin surrounded
by mountains on all sides and has the Geumho River
and Sincheon Stream running through the city. Judging
from the plain and patternless earthenware excavated
in this area, Daegu had become a major settlement
in about 1000 B.C. |
|
Around 100 A.D. Daegu was called
"Dalguhwa" or "Dalgubol" meaning "big
heights", and it was renamed as Daegu(which also
means big city) in 1780. It also means 'big city'. Since
then, it has been the center of Gyeongsang province. As
industry developed and its geographic importance increased,
and since Gyeongsang-gamyeong, the provincial government
office in 1601 was established in Daegu, it has been the
center of administration, business and military of the
Yeongnam region.
In 1907, as a colony of Japan, the National Debt Repayment
Movement, one of the national independence movements,
first began first in Daegu. This happenstance is something
that we Daegu people are very proud of.
In July, 1981 Daegu was upgraded to a Jikhalsi, or a district,
under the direct control of central government and its
area was extended to be 455.90§´.
With the beginning of historic local autonomy in July,
1995, it became a metropolitan city. In march 1995, it
absorbed Dalseong-gun, a county in its neighborhood; its
area mounted to 885.30§´ , and its population jumped to
2.5million.
Now, Daegu metropolitan city is entering the new Millennium
as a hub of Yeongnam area in Korea. |
